Scale Model Railroading as a Learning Activity
The proposed project is a 'hands-on' educationally sound tool to introduce a child to basic skills.

Controlling Purpose: to teach upper elementary - middle school age boys (and girls) industrial type skills and related instruction. A scale model railroad is the vehicle to teach skills such as: blueprint reading, drafting, woodwork, metals, low voltage and 110 volt AC electrical incorporating mechanical, mental and problem solving phases.

The activity is long-term, tested to be within the ability of a ten-year-old (the flat car shown was constructed by an 8-yr-old), teaches proper use of tools, and interjects suitable technical information. The parent should look at the skills to be mastered while the child will see it as a 'fun' time.
